The operating system helps promote a support nearly any number of applications providing  they all access the same resources and services in the same way. By using a standard and comprehensible interface, users could control, configure, and manage the system hardware, greatly reducing the time and coding needed to design an application. Stephen, (2021)

It is clear that an operating system is thought of as the intermediary between the applications and users and the hardware and computing resources of a computer or computer network. It manages and controls the resources and computing capability although giving users a logical interface for interacting with the physical computer and running computer applications.

The common operating system architectures and generic features have been covered in this chapter. Operating system technologies' fundamentals and brief histories have been examined. Operating system ideas and typical commercial architectures have been demonstrated. It has been discussed how operating systems do typical tasks including managing processes and threads, managing memory, managing files and file systems, managing I/O systems, and managing networks and communications. A formal presentation of the real-time operating system RTOS+ has been made. Yingxu (2004)
